School Board News for June 2010

In case you did not see the School Board News (it was not mailed out this year to save money), here is a link to it under 'Announcements' on the ORCSD web site.

Definitely check it out. You will read what our Board goals are and some interesting updates from the principals, committees, etc.

  1. Correction! This is the second year the Board has distributed the newsletter electronically. Hard copies are available at the schools, town halls, and libraries.

  2. Does anyone know why this week's school board meeting was not televised? Wasn't it going to focus on the budget?

  3. Great question! My understanding is that Superindendent Colter did not feel it was necessary to tape it. (It was only the budget discussion after all.) For all of his recent talk of working with Megan (who my friends and I really do appreciate making the effort she has made) his actions do not coincide with his words.

  4. Since when does HE decided anyway, why is the board not insisting that meetings such as these are taped?

  5. Another case where Colter calls the shots. Too bad that he doesn't have a boss... oh wait, he does. Why can't we get rid of him?

  6. I know I'll never get a substantive answer on this, but...on what specifically is the anonymous blogger's "understanding" with regard to Superintendent Colter's opinion based?

  7. Does our Superintendent value communication with the community?

  8. I just watched to posted clip and applaud the superintendent for his willingness to post information following the request of a single individual.

The clip is, of course, misleadingly titled (that's to be expected in this atmosphere of "gotcha" complaining, sadly).

Superintendent Colter was simply recalling a conversation between himself and his assistant in which she referred to her then-present situation to be a "monkey on her back". In other words, it was something that needed to be handled. And it was.

To take something insulting from that betrays an unyielding intent to be insulted.

Previous posters have suggested that the continual nipping at the heels of the administration cannot help but lead to distraction from the academic mission.
Superintendent Colter's story substantiates that view nicely.

But to answer the poster's question: "Does our Superintendent value communication with the community?"

Given that his administration acquiesced in short order, answer would seem to be yes.
    Thanks for posting the link!

  9. I am still waiting to hear from Howard Colter about why he won't address the gorilla on his chest.

  10. I just watched the clip and i defy anyone to tell me that teh superintendent was speaking respectfully. How dare he refer to teh people who pay his bloated salary as "monkeys"!

Colter only values communication of teh one-way variety. The rest of us are expected to pay and shut up.
