DURHAM — The Oyster River School Board has bought out the remainder of the contract for Superintendent Howard Colter, who will be leaving his position with the district as of June 30.

Before Wednesday's meeting, Colter was scheduled to stay with the district until June 2012.

In a statement after a nonpublic decision at Wednesday night's School Board meeting, the board said the decision was a mutual agreement with Colter and the School Board, but did not give a reason why Colter was leaving.

  1. It is not logical to count the cost of an interim into the cost of Howard's buyout. The cost of this decision is: Buyout + Hiring Costs - (Differential in prior and interim salary+benefits). Ms Reino should have queried that.

  2. It's still a waste of taxpayer money no matter how you choose to count it. Taxpayers deserve some answers.

  3. An inevitable end to the situation. No matter what you think of Mr. Colter, there is just no sense in a two year lame duck Superintendent. Doesn't matter who the Super is- that's just poor management.

Every day Colter stayed was another day that the community couldn't move beyond the divisions and agita surrounding him and the board.

Every day was another lost day that the new Superintendent didn't have to get our district pointed in a new direction, in partnership with a HS principal they helped hired.

If Mr. Colter was a willing participant in his contract buyout and understood the progress his mere presence was impeding, then I commend him for doing the right thing and getting out of the way. Was the right thing to do (assuming that's how it went down.)

  4. Well, for one, I am stunned. Didn't see this coming at all.

I am concerned, however, that it appears that is not the case for others in the community.

Anyone that talks out of place, ie about nonpublic matters to public persons, is not doing the community a service. While it may make some happy, it certainly does nothing to lessen the divide in the community.

Afterall, that is THE uniting request of our community. Regardless to how an individual feels about the situation, we all want to be brought together. Not divided.
