  1. You can't be serious!

We are in the 21st century now and reality is that in a 2-parent family, both work full time jobs. It is nearly impossible to juggle half-day kindergarten with a full time job. Besides, most kids are in daycare for a full day. Kindergarten as it is deprives 5 year old children of valuable socialization and growth by only being in school for 2 1/2 hours.

Get your priorities straight. The schools are to educate our kids, not political tools to further an agenda.

  2. It is not my responsibility as a tax payer to pay for your child to be in
daycare. my family has made sacrifices for one parent o tbe home with our children. Full day kindergarten may be good on many levels, but in THIS school district we can not pay for htat to happen. we ahve SO many other things to concente our spending. Extra recess and lunch for 5 year olds is not in the best interest of our disrict.

  3. Yes, I am serious. I do acknowledge, and have experienced first hand, the challenges families face when both parents work and children make multiple transitions. However, a school district's responsibility is education, not parenting. I care deeply about education and my children's preparedness for the future. With this, I cannot support our District in spending our tax dollars on Full Day Kindergarten in lieu other important, academic initiatives. I am not sure what "political tools" you are referencing to further an agenda. I do have an agenda, though - - to ensure my children receive an excellent education at ORCSD. Thank you for your participation in this important debate.

  4. The question is not whether to spend $340,000 per year on Full Day Kindergarten. It is taking a step back and getting more value for that money by increasing languages or AP classes. What is the better long term benefit and the one that will benefit the most students. Think of kids in middle school now...what will full day K do for them? What will it take away? What other benefits can we all agree to.

Finally, the school board is doing this WITHOUT a warrant article vote in March. I am MOST against that.

  5. Many 2 parent families in this district have chosen to live on one salary because they believe in the long term benefits of being home with their children during their pre school years. Our family has made this choice, and it is a huge financial challenge that we see as worth it. Although some of the 2 parent/2 income families feel it is o.k. to ask the tax payers to pay for their 5 year old's day care expenses, I wonder how they would feel if my family asked for a financial contribution from the tax payers to cover some of our mortgage, heating oil, or grocery bill. Choosing to live on one or two salaries is a families personal decision. With that comes personal responsibilities. The challenges of day care should not be listed as reasons why we should create full day kindergarten in our district.

  6. Again, it all comes down to what the District's role should be. Is it education or parenting / child care? I think that most would agree that the former is the District's priority. So, how can each dollar the School District spends be used to optimize education for our children? We need to demand academic excellence and strict adherence to educational priorities from our School Board. Pay our teachers well, offer rigorous academic curricula, support well equipped facilities...these are the priorities, not Full Day Kindergarten.

  7. I have a child in middle school and another one is getting ready for kindergarten, We are both working and it is going to be tough to manage a child in 1/2 day kindergarten but still I support better curriculum at high school or middle school then full day kindergarten, because I think in the long run kindergarten is not going to make so much difference as AP courses or something like that

  8. Just because you CAN push them, does not mean you SHOULD. There is no proof of lasting effects from Full Day Kindergarten. Children need balance. Half Day Kindergarten is a choice, and must remain one. Listen to the experts... Take a stand... HalfDayKindergarten.org
